Freedom is a gift many risk their lives for while those that have it hold it carelessly. One of the greatest freedoms is the freedom of possibility. For all the issues that I grew up in, there are wonderful gifts. We are not tested and categorized when we are young; we are forever free to choose. We share a common language and customs, flexible rules, and an openness to others that creates endless possibilities for anyone willing. Everything needed to exercise freedom is within us – courage, hope, and belief.
Freedom instructions are few. They could be summed up by the following. Do not hurt others. Respect those you like as well as everyone else. Walk and live life in a safe way – for others as well as yourself.
Yet, there is a “but” to wonderful gifts. I do not believe there should be, yet given my experience with others as well as a bit of self awareness, there is a “but”. I seem to want instructions on how to win. I often think it is a “need” but in truth, I know it is merely a “want”. What is the best way to live? How do I “win” in everything I do? Can I pursue this path to happiness?
There is good news and interesting news. The good news is that God's gift of freedom is greater than I imagine! We are free to be whatever it is we want to be. We are free to choose any and everything. Our destiny, options, and outcomes rest with us. God's gift includes the foundation that makes the impossible possible.
The interesting news is that God's instructions on how we are to do this are rarely specific. Sometimes Divinity intercedes; “Here's what you are to do. Send men to Joppa to get Simon, the one everyone calls Peter. He is staying with Simon the Tanner, whose house is down by the sea.” (Acts 10.6) Most of the time, Divinity invites us into a relationship that is a journey filled with wonderful surprises.
Today is for living.
