There is a tell-tale sequence of questions and answers that always expose those who know the answers in their heads but not their hearts. The question usually centers on people, their relationships and motivation. Real life is never quite as simple as the books make it seem, nor as logical. Real life doesn’t always go according to script. Real life includes the messy stuff of living usually wrapped under stress, living, and “it just happened”. Yet in the question often answered one way and lived another, is the heart of the real question of life; are you engaged with people are simply doing it for yourself? We often don’t like to admit our answers, even to ourselves. We know how our words sound in the presence of the questions, how fundamentally incomplete they are, and even how the sounds that appear to be full and confident come at a price that is paid by our hearts and souls. There is no where to hide, no way to create experiences or engagement that we have not had. The obvious is there; in our hearts and in the hearts of those who see because they have already walked the path. The questions are posed because people genuinely desire to understand your experience and expertise. Yet in the middle of the truth seekers are those out to expose and destroy. Some questions have no answers. That it the heart of experience many have not yet had. Even when a obvious question was thrown at Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?” (John 8.4, 5) Jesus knew from experience that the academic answer didn’t deal with the heart of the question and was a trap besides. I wonder if I am willing to go beyond the obvious with God today. In the midst of everything going on will I simply trust and experience what it can be like following God’s lead? It may not seem obvious, but this is today’s question.
