As I walked under the lights marking the 53rd anniversary as a nation, I was struck by how far the country has grown. From a dusty town with two paved roads and a dream to a growing, thriving financial centre moving faster and farther than anyone imagined. From the endless lights on every pole lining major roads to crowds gathering to mark the occasion, it is a fantastic celebration of the nation’s origins and progress.
As I consider the scars and marks from my journey, I find myself wanting to celebrate even as I recognise the pain along the way, inflicted and received. So many moments could have been better. Despite teaching experiences, I have been a slow learner. As today begins, I hold reminders that change how I see what is ahead.
Life was, is, better than I deserve. There are reasons to celebrate. Growth occurred despite my reluctance to change. With my tendency to relentlessly focus on what was coming next, in hindsight, it is easy to see and focus on the lost steps. I hear an invitation to care about what comes next. I need to remember and reflect on the story. There are lessons and celebrations to be embraced. I can see Divinity at work, echoing the writer’s summary comment on the life of one of the greats; “That’s how it happened that from one man’s dead and shriveled loins there are now people numbering into the millions.” (Hebrews 11.12)
Life is an invitation waiting to be embraced. There are reasons to hide and take cover every day. With the obstacles and confrontations marking the path ahead, retreat and defensiveness appear viable options. As I consider my choice, I hear the gentle and persistent calling to engage in the battle ahead. Care is a worthy addition to my intent. Kindness can be a defining part of who I am. Strangers and members of my community could use my support and assistance. There are reasons to live and fight for what is right.
I celebrate and look ahead, eager to step into life.
