As I watched parents interacting with their young child, I was struck by the unconditional nature of what was going on. I know they have their moments which interrupt their relationship, however in this scene they were amazingly in love.
When I think of my children, I see the same emotions playing out. I wish I could say that my best moments were always on display, but human weakness is evident across all my relationships, even those most important to me! The lingering reflection of what I witnessed in this young family took me to those I love and beyond. It was as if I was glimpsing and beginning to understand how Divinity understands Her relationship with you and me.
The love being offered from parent to child is unconditional. There is no expectation of anything in return. Perfect love from a parent to a child because s/he is their child. While a smiling response takes parents to levels of emotional bonding they never imagined, that is not the reason they love. It is as if each parent cannot help her/himself. Divinity loves us because of who and what Divinity is. From the moment a mother feels the first stirring in her womb to the father’s indescribable joy in holding his newborn, love is created and lives.
The love being offered applies to every child in the family. Each child is special and unique in her/his own way. The emotional bond which exists transcends everything else in a parent’s life. I cannot imagine Divinity outside of love for every child of God. I know others have witnessed and experienced this reality as I read the psalmist’s words; “Generous to a fault, you lavish your favor on all creatures.” (Psalm 145.16).
Even as a child tests a parent’s love, life reminds me of how enduring this love is. I have had moments of not knowing what I should do next. What I have never known is the absence of love for my child. Divinity in action within, reminding me of Her deepest hopes for you and me.
