My friends can be described and grouped in many different ways. One is those who proactively invite me to join them, and others who fall into the if convenient or happen to think about it. I hold the proactive ones in a special place in my heart. At times the level of care and engagement in my life can be too much, yet I find that I am always appreciative. Each cares enough to ask and then listen. Each looks forward to spending time, if only to catch-up on the events in our lives.
As I think about a recent conversation and what followed, I was reminded of the following.
It is good to be in the presence of caring, compassion, and community. When individuals bring this to the table, the outcome will always be positive.
Being in the presence of caring individuals does not mean that evil disappears or one has answers to every conundrum. What it means is that one will be energized, filled with courage, and walk with more hope. Additionally, one’s awareness of the help that is available tends to improve.
Sharing life helps one realize that everyone has beauty and darkness, good and evil fighting to dominate. At any given moment, one may have something extreme – a difficult or painful event or an unexpected celebration. In every circumstance, things are better when shared with others.
I came away from a conversation with a stronger sense of the possible. I know it will not be easy. Using an overused metaphor, I doubt it will be smooth sailing. What I do know is that I will walk into the future stronger, more courageous, and in a small way filled with more wisdom because of the friends at my side.
I hear another invitation, “So come, let us worship: bow before him, on your knees before God, who made us!” (Psalm 95.6) I know it is from someone that proactively cares. Come now, it is time.
You and I have time for whatever we think is important. Friends are sources of hope and wisdom.
