In a seedy London Blues Bar with no room to move, a Jimi Hendrix influenced blues band did their thing. It was fun, amazing, and creative. Even as I walked out I wondered what made it work. Was it the company I was keeping? Partially. Was it the way the band seamlessly worked together, each playing off the other, effortlessly pulling through harmonies into an experience not to be missed? Partially. Was it the ambience, or rather lack of which struck a cord. Yes, but only partially. Everything had its part and while good, only became amazing when the combination was there.
This has and continues to happen in all parts of life. Pieces, parts really, come together to tell a bigger story, create a great experience, and just tell the story of the journey for a period of time. It isn’t unusual for the participant(s) not to know they are involved in something greater than themselves and the steps they can see. There is always a story within the story within the story.
The story of Jesus death includes an act by one right as the narrative closes. The words capture the moment as “one of the soldiers stabbed him in the side with his spear. Blood and water gushed out.” (John 19.34) This is a part of the greater story, but only part.
You and I walk and travel within a community. Much of the story is misunderstood, unknown, or ignored. Yet the story continues to be written. I wonder if I understand the role I play in this community. It is only a part, clearly not the main, but it is a part. Am I willing to be a force for compassion? Will I take the time to capture and appreciate what is underway in the present? Is there any chance I will be intentional, not accidental in my actions?
Today comes and a new part of the story begins. Your pen is already moving. The lines are emerging. We can, do, and will make a difference. The question remaining is what kind.
