Perspective

I was always ready for a fight when I was young.  I’m not talking about a physical brawl.  What I enjoyed was the confrontation which potentially would lead to change.  The more the better!  I wanted to pursue any and all opportunities to improve the situation I found myself in.  Every aspect of corporate life could be improved!  We could refine the organization, enhance the way we worked together, improve the speed and quality on our deliverables.  Any one put one’s hand to could be done better.  One just needed to be open, adaptable, flexible, and most of all – willing to listen.

I am not as ready to fight today.  The aggression of youth has been replaced by perspective and a greater respect for the role of a team.  Without the community engaging in the vision it isn’t worth much.  Without the hearts of others, change isn’t going to make much difference.  If people don’t see they have a need, change will never been accepted.

It is the latter point which causes me to pause most frequently.  We need to know, understand, and experience the truth of our reality.  We need people who will tell us what is real.  We need to listen.

Simon Peter had potential oozing from all sides.  Yet he needed something to break free.  Jesus took on the role at the end of one conversation.  “‘I'm telling you the very truth now: When you were young you dressed yourself and went wherever you wished, but when you get old you'll have to stretch out your hands while someone else dresses you and takes you where you don't want to go.’  He said this to hint at the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.  And then he commanded, ‘Follow me.’” (John 21.18, 19)  Simon Peter was now in a position to act with maturity.

You and I have the same opportunity today.  The Spirit is giving us feedback, more if we are willing to listen.  Take in everything life is telling you; listen, learn, and then act.  Today’s here.
