As part of my continuing education about all things coffee, I found myself intrigued by the differences between a long black and an Americano. When I make a black coffee with an espresso base, I have traditionally used the Americano method. Several educational videos talked about the improved taste and experience of making a long black instead.
Arriving early for a meeting at a premium coffee shop, I asked for a long black. Given the puzzled look on the person’s face behind the counter, I quickly gave in and switched to a traditional Americano. Walking around to pick up my drink, the barista quietly turned to me and asked, “Would you like a long black?”
The picture is my openness and curious anticipation of what might follow. To my surprise, there is a difference. Where possible, I will order a long black. As I sipped and mused over the new experience, I found myself listening to Life’s whispers sharing her observations; they still echo as I enjoy a fresh cup of coffee to start my day.
Being open and curious leads to new insights and experiences. In letting go of my biases and formed views, I stepped through a doorway into a new space. In contrast to many moments where I am challenged to let go, this decision was not difficult. Looking back to where I was, I can see that “Endings are better than beginnings. Sticking to it is better than standing out.” (Ecclesiastes 7.8). Growing from the lessons and insights life offers me begins with my willingness to be open and curious. Endings are the measure, not the state of unknowing before I stepped out in faith.
Life is personal and unique. My sequence of steps that leads me to seeing Divinity may be different from yours. The questions I face are never about the perfect course of steps. My questions rest in the heart of each moment. What will I do with what I know? Will I accept others unconditionally, supporting each with the support s/he longs for?
Today is my pick-up time.
