It was the semi-final round for five growth-stage companies. I walked into the room to the watchful eyes of the founders. Each, in her and his own way, wanted to understand how we, the three judges, would evaluate their pitch and company proposition. I could feel how much they wanted to be heard. I could sense varying degrees of nervousness and uncertainty. In hindsight, some were better prepared than others. At that moment, I could hear the single ask: “Please listen”.
As I start my day, thinking and planning for what is on the schedule, it feels as if life echoes the writer’s words: “The Holy Spirit says, Today, please listen” (Hebrews 3.7). I can anticipate her themes. At the same time, I wonder how the situations will unfold and how I will respond in the moment with the mantras from my morning reflection.
Care is more than a response. Care begins with respect and acceptance. The foundation for the interaction, even in a temporary relationship, is based on a metaphorical embrace and assurance that the individual is acceptable as they are. There is no ask to change. Nothing is required to be completed before care can be offered and accepted. Care begins with another individual. It is completed by actions and words.
Kindness is, at its best, unconditional. Life reminds me that kindness goes beyond the immediate to include the person. I find kindness permeating the heart and soul of the receiver. It is more than a physical embrace. Kindness is when one embraces the other’s heart and soul, lifting the emotions and spirits with hope, a sense of possibility, and belief. I have experienced both sides of this coin. When received, I have come to see it as a priceless gift that can never be fully repaid. The best I can do in return is to offer this gift to another. Yesterday, I listened. I was in the moment, hoping for the best, looking to see how I could be supportive. My prayer is that I bring the same intensity to each moment today.
