The entrance from the underground space for a mix of VIP and general parking to the Galleria Mall is unusual. Among other things, placed in the corner are two thoughtful sculptures. They stand without attention, passed by without a thought by most. I often go by without thinking, unsure why yesterday was any different. On this day, I saw them, stopped, and reflected as life whispered in the poor-quality air and sounds that come with underground parking anywhere.
Creative gifts can be gifts without conditions. I appreciate the thought, imagination, and expression that goes into a creative process. For this reason, three-dimensional expressions, sculptures specifically, touch me differently than other forms. The multidimensional combination of form, textures, colours, shadows, and meaning can take a two-dimensional image into the heart of my imagination and experience. Letting go, especially to the entrance of an underground parking lot where many will see but not understand is an example of what an exceptional gift without conditions or expectations can look like.
Seeing beyond does not always lead to a larger view. In this case, it is easy to infer one’s assumptions about the placement and intent of the designers of the mall. I know there are those who see the art pieces as pointless expressions. As I reflected, I saw so much more. To the critics I would offer a recurring response to the critics; “I hope they go blind staring in their mirrors, get ulcers from playing at god.” (Romans 11.10). Stated in the positive, I would suggest the following. Slow down and be present in the moment. Be open, willing to go beyond one’s initial reaction, and give permission to experience with hope, positive intent, and possibilities.
In all things, live with a thankful heart. This may be an extravagant gift. It is not required for parking. It is not particularly functional. As I slowed down, and rested in the moment, I was lifted, inspired, and called to hope. I will forever look at the pieces differently going forward. To the artist, thank you. Today is creation time.
