Positions

It is interesting to watch newly appointed individuals take their place in an organization.  From the inside out view versus the outside in perspective, there are many different combinations of how leaders approach new positions as well as how their communities react.  Each sets the stage for what follows.  One hopes each side can adjust towards each other. My experience suggests that coming together seems to be more of an exception rather than the rule.

Recent appointments are living reminders of many different life lessons are available for us to use.  From the long list, several stand out.

“Who” makes the appointment decision and the level of support that follows makes a difference.  It is one thing to begrudgingly appoint someone to a position.  Combine this attitude with a reticent voice and the message to the community is loud and clear.  In contrast, a strong voice followed by open acts of trust and faith send a message that is strong and clear.  When this happens it is as if we are reliving an old story where the Pharaoh “appointed him master of his palace, put him in charge of all his business” (Psalm 105.21)

Attitude towards others, especially those more junior or outside the inner circle, conveys more than talk ever would.  Natural doubts, uncertainties, and unknowns are answered and filled by inclusive and respective actions.  If the initial attitude is systemically repeated without obvious effort, perceptions take root and opinions based on experience begin to formed.

Taking the time to let others go first is a quiet sign of confidence and strength.  Equally so, pushing to the front, sharing one perspective before understanding where others are coming from, can be reflective of someone that has a need to prove themselves.  Quiet confidence backed up by intentional actions and attitudes that are endorsed by others that one trusts creates endless opportunities.

As I watch, I am hopeful.  As I embrace, I find opportunities infused with compassion, caring, and passionate desires to make a positive difference.  In life’s chaos and pain, waiting doors to a better future.
