If you had the power to change the course of a life, would you use it? Does your answer remain the same if there was no recognition, appreciation, or even acknowledgement of your action?
In my childhood community, I heard miracle stories. I cannot recall a single story with a purpose of highlighting or promoting the person involved with the healing. The stories were always about the situation, individuals and families at risk, and a loving God’s response.
As a ten-year-old, I listened and absorbed the stories. There was much I did not understand. My questions started with the people who appeared in the story as a bridge between Divinity and humanity in trouble. I saw a recurring theme of humble gratefulness in the characters. Looking back, I think each was a bit overwhelmed in their connecting role, especially in the shadows of the personal weaknesses they knew all too well.
I asked myself then and now, if I had the power to change the course of a life, would I?
A psalm reminds me of how many ways a life can be changed. “Thank the miracle-working God, His love never quits.” (Psalm 136.4)
Hope changes lives. I remember pivotal moments where I was caught in a dark space. A word, touch, or call from another often gifted me with a different way of seeing the moment and the future. Hope changed my life.
Belonging is a priceless way of being protected. In moments where I thought I could not escape unjust accusations, when another wrapped his arms around me and stood up for me, my life pivoted. When I know I belong to a community with care and kindness, my life changed.
Forgiveness and compassion bring healing in a way nothing else can. In failure and regret, the gift of grace when I least deserve it opens a door to a new future.
Yes, there are other life threats which need miracles. I challenge myself and you to change the lives around you with what you have. Taking the first step always leads to more.
