As the flight reached its cruising altitude, I stared at the tray. I had been waiting, knowing a time would come for action. With a simple flick of the latch, the tray came down along with whispers that are with me as today begins. There was something in the moment, the symbolism and knowing I would usually forget everything before the tray. I would forget the latch, its representation, and the thinking that went into the moment. In forgetting, usually, the whispers of the moment would quietly drift off, unheard and lost. Today can be different.
Decisions have a time and place. The more intentional I am, the higher the probability that I will be able to bring my heart and soul along with my mind. Each moment in time is an opportunity for me to bring compassion, care, and kindness to this place. I can use all the gifts and symbolic reminders to understand the bigger story and express my care to make a difference. When I forget everything within my sacred place, I squander the moment and its potential.
Acting on a decision is accepting an invitation to be in the coming moment. The decision is an important moment. As big as it can be, it is just a moment. Once decided and executed, it is time for me to follow an old model that has carried on across the generations; “After this was set up, the priests went about their duties in the large tent.” (Hebrews 9.6). I tend to forget the past and live in the present. When the tray came down, I remembered everything – finding out I needed to fly, booking the tickets, getting to the gate, and even my seat. The moment quietly became an opportunity to bring my awareness and heart to those around me.
Each moment is part of my story’s revelation. My plan was unfolding. I could use the new information to grow into everything that would follow. My preparations were helpful, and yet there were new decisions to be made. Progress is my step towards more.
