There are times where it is hard to believe that someone is going to do what they said they were going to do. Regardless of the pros or cons, good or bad, the idea that follow through, commitment, and accountability would drive action often catches me by surprise. It is as if I have become conditioned to expect less. Even the best deliver less than 100%.
As I think of what changes with actions, in myself I see the following.
I listen more and better. With the belief that another will follow her/his words into action, I find myself listening to what people are saying differently. I pay attention to the details of each conversation. I ask clarifying questions, looking to make sure I understand their intent and messaging. I do not stop with the first conversation but look for links into the ones that follow.
My support or opposition is triggered by the early indicators. Gone is the idea of ignoring or disbelief. Knowing that there is a high likelihood, dare I use the word guaranteed, that the words will come to life in action, I react early. I engage in the debate. I respect and work the process. I respond to each conversation with the gravity that the subject deserves.
I look for indicators and telltales in the early signs of action. Has the message changed? Are things different than planned? If I hear a call to act, then I put things in motion.
Everything starts with belief. The psalmist described it well, “He proved to his people that he could do what he said: hand them the nations on a platter – a gift!” (Psalm 111.06) The question for me today is words and action. I have an opportunity to connect the dots, to link anticipation with outcomes, expectations with engagement.
As I watch, I have no idea where we are headed. My best advice is to listen more deeply and engage early. We are part of the same family, even when we choose to not act like it. We make us better.
