Many children have been blessed with great parents. They may not always believe that, yet with time, the dedication, intent, and investment of the parents in the child becomes clear. Mothers and fathers play special roles, each finding a niche in the relationship with their child. The uniqueness of the relationships often defies understanding.
I have been blessed by having several “moms” in my life; two more important than others. Today marks the day friends and family will gather to honor the life of one who is now silently resting. Hers was an extraordinary life by the measure of anyone who knew her. Like many mothers the depth, commitment, and passion which shaped her life went, for a large part, unnoticed except by those touched by her laughter, smile, and gift of unconditional acceptance. Through her I found myself reveling in the beauty to be found in the midst of tragedy. With her smile and hug I discovered confidence within that I never knew existed. Even in the middle of a cooking disaster, moment of failure or misunderstanding, you knew love, compassion, and mercy were still alive and kicking! Everything took its shape from the center of being fully and completely engaged in life.
I have often wondered how this “mom” of mine found her center. She came from humble beginnings and never had an excess of the world’s normal measure of success. Yet her life demonstrated how the real blessings are often things we do not focus on; happiness, peace, and an extraordinary sense of community. I find myself listening to her voice and rediscovering the values and priorities I hold to be most valuable.
I wish I could have introduced you to her. In a way I already have. When you see beauty, hear music, or find yourself laughing, you will have discovered and met Betty. I know part of her prayer; “In the same way that you [God] gave me a mission in the world, I give them [the kids] a mission in the world.” (John 17.18)
This is your mission and mine.
