The facts supporting the idea that business has punctured the dreams of many should not surprise. Men have failed other men for generations. Even when it is not intentional, the inability to achieve realistic and dreams less so hurts. In today economy, it is clear that the normal safeguards were abandoned in the search of wealth, power, and success.
As someone who was involved at a junior, often non-decision making role in several institutions during the recent past, I would like to offer one observation as a defense. The abandonment of normal safeguards was not done willingly. Many of us fought the change based on our training and experience. We knew we needed risk management support. We understand the financial controls played a vital role in our success. We accepted the role of those enforcing compliance and regulatory policies. We worked, fought, and often lost. It was as if we were pushing against superior forces.
In hindsight, the forces were temporarily superior. In time, greed found itself exposed and many are paying the price. In the midst of this, it is important to realize one what does when one finds one’s self facing steady opposition.
Strive to make a difference, somewhere anywhere. Follow the example of others when they faced opposition, like when “Paul and Barnabas shrugged their shoulders and went on to the next town, Iconium, brimming with joy and the Holy Spirit, two happy disciples.” (Acts 13.52)
Embrace ones values. Talk about it with anyone willing to listen. Share your reasoning. Listen to the thoughts of others. Dialogue on subjects that matter.
Willingly be accountable for your actions. Accountability is part of a learning process. Embedded within accountability are awareness, change, and growth.
Love patience. Standing up for what is right is often not recognized or rewarded.
Live for the best reasons. We are not in this to win a battle or war; Truth has already done that. We are here to be messengers of mercy, soldiers of compassion, and tools of hope.
Winds are strong but Truth is stronger.
