Multinational corporations are a focused group. Competitive, focused on results, game players all. By the end of each game, the person who generates the most money usually wins. Families take a slightly different approach however the natural competition between each member for who is going to get their way (hours in front of the TV, menu for supper, shopping list, and who takes out the garbage for example) is a similar battle. Everyone wants to be the one person to come out on top!
Yes, I know that women are supposed to be “less competitive” than men are. Without being too presumptuous, I believe we all work to fulfill our individual needs of being accepted, experiencing love, and having a purpose. While women play this out differently, the interaction and goal is virtually the same as “winning”.
Where does God fit in with this? Most of the time, if I am honest, he does not fit at all! I fall into the trap of trying to win, trying to be right, and trying to serve on my own. There is an alternative! “Abraham entered into what God was doing for him, and that was the turning point. He trusted God to set him right instead of trying to be right on his own.” (Romans 4.3)
God can fit into every nook and cranny of your life and mine. He can take our experiences in going to work, walking around, sleeping, eating, and interacting and turn them into something far greater than anything we can do by ourselves. If I really want to win, and win in real ways that far exceed anything I can imagine, I will take the step of trusting God to lead the way and do that hard stuff. The way to win is to ignore my need to win every tactical step and spend my time and energy in stepping in sync with God’s team. The Spirit is waiting, Jesus did His work, and God is marshalling the bands!
The next step is resting with me. Do I want to win?
