I found myself wandering through an upscale hotel lobby, waiting for everyone to arrive for a meeting. The lobby was overflowing with an odd collection of art pieces. If it was a show, the presentation was chaotic at best. I could not imagine a theme that could bring together the oils, acrylics, and photography. It was interesting in a strange, eclectic, and messy way. As strange as it all was, on one side, sitting prominently if only because it did not fit with anything, was a vegetarian cookbook on a stand. I did not think it appropriate to remove the book to have a look at the contents, so I have no idea what is inside.
The feeling of confusion and wonder has stayed with me. What was I supposed to take away from this mix of ingredients? I understand that there were no obvious rules. I did not see any price tags, so was any piece up for sale? The hallways and stairs were overflowing with art, to the point one had not noticed the art to navigate one’s way around the pieces.
By traditional measures, the lobby and art were an odd pair. At the same time, there was a bubbly and carefree vibe in the room. I could feel it. I could see it manifested in the smiles and laughter. People were positive. It felt hopeful.
Amazing experiences can be experienced with no-limits cooking. Yes, tradition can be good. Equally, great food can come from fusion, vegetarianism, and many other approaches. When I celebrate the resulting taste and textures, especially with good company and great conversation, exceptional memories are created.
Life is enriched with diversity. Experience reminds me that I am stronger when I collaborate with someone who brings different views and skills to the relationship. Young and old, informed and naïve, experienced and growing, we are all one, “Outsiders and insiders, rejoice together!” (Romans 15.10)
My recipe for success today remains to be made. I will use whatever ingredients are here, enjoy the possibilities of what can be, and cook with love.
