The art by the door gifted me with a sense of peace and acceptance. In the quietness of one’s soul, I recognise an unquenchable thirst to know I belong. As I walked by, I was surprised by how a simple art piece next to a door filled a spot within me. I was reminded of the embrace of acceptance, the assurance that comes from belonging, and the awareness leading to confidence that I am a part of a community revolving around kindness and care. The evidence is around me, even when I forget. The foundation is solid, even when I wobble. Everything is waiting for my acceptance. What follows always starts with recognition.
As dark as life can seem, I stand in hope, opportunity, and support. I may not see it. I often catch myself ignoring the obvious. The hype and chaos of the day is my excuse. Yet, as I look to see what surrounds me, I realize I am surrounded by individuals who care, communities that accept, and situations where I can contribute. Life is my opportunity to exercise my passion and desire to make a difference. I know I care, even when my actions and words suggest that I do not. This moment is my window to do something about caring to make a difference.
I am not alone; there are others who also care. I look beyond the shadows around me and find myself standing with caring individuals. As I think of the model of others in the same situation, I think of Abraham. A writer records his encounter with someone outside his family and normal community. He recognised someone who was a model of kindness and care in action. “Abraham in turn gave him a tenth of the spoils. ‘Melchizedek’ means ‘King of Righteousness.’ ‘Salem’ means ‘Peace.’ So, he is also ‘King of Peace.’” (Hebrews 7.2) When I look, I find my opportunity to recognise and follow that recognition with an embrace and encouragement.
As today begins, I stand out in the open, excited and challenged by the opportunities I see.
