As the sun rises in the east, I find myself reflecting. In looking at images of the past through a glass, I begin to understand more than I was able to at the time. In addition to the changes in my awareness and understanding, nuances, motivations, and intent all take on different hues. It is as if the glass filters the details with the benefit of time. Candidly, my motivation to look changes what I see. Candidly, the act of reflecting starts with my motivation and intent. When I describe the “best” reflection, I find myself using many different words; accurate, stark, candid, authentic, and even harsh. When it is true, I may not like what I see. I am confident though that I can do something with my insight.
Today’s reflection reminds me of looking at a window bathed in crisp sunlight. I cannot see through to whatever is inside. I can see others with clarity.
Letting go of one’s assumptions of others is a step towards accepting without conditions. I often think this is the easy step. It is when my assumptions are positive, helpful, and encouraging. The “but” comes with others holding something different. It is in these moments that I realise it is a privilege to see them with clarity. It can be the first step of using my curiosity to ask questions, listen to their story, and embrace them as a part of Divinity’s family.
Threats are within as well as outside. When I look at a reflection, Life reminds me to start with myself. It is too easy to see others as threats, ignoring what is within reach. Old reminds still echo; “Duly constituted authorities are only a threat if you’re trying to get by with something. Decent citizens should have nothing to fear.” (Romans 13.3) When I start in the mirror, with the reflection that I can see, touch, and know, I find myself holding the opportunity to be aware and grow, to forgive and embrace, to encourage with kindness.
Reflections filled with kindness, care, and empathy restore Hope.
