As I listened with my eyes closed to the music, I could feel the presence of the band in the room. The mix between the band members individually and as a group with each other and the audience was magical. The small venue pushed everyone together. The secret sauce was the musicians, specifically the lead singer. He dominated the stage, physically and at times vocally. Concurrently, he effortlessly encouraged, empowered, and released others to bring them into center stage focus. With minimalist movements, the main attraction we had all come to see directed our attention to the supporting players. Each stepped into the opportunity in a way that surprised everyone in the room. The result was a series of highs for everyone in the room that touched the audience in uniquely different ways.
As I think back on the music letting my mind replay the experience, I am struck by the way Life continues to take me back to the scene with whispers.
Leadership that makes a difference often starts with awe. The interactions within the band and with the audience reflected an old Psalm; “The holy angels are in awe before him; he looms immense and august over everyone around him.” (Psalm 89.7) It starts and then builds.
Leadership that endures and makes a difference is never isolated. It involves, distributes, and engages everyone within reach. Said another way, leadership is never about the one, it is always about the many.
Leadership that makes a difference takes individuals to a higher place that is closer to their aspiration and dreams. While the destinations may be different, the process is the same. An invitation to be part of something wonderful, the opportunity to participate in a way that works for one’s role, and a joyous celebration when everything works in harmony.
I watched one take others to places of wonder, beauty, and awe. People clapped, sang, and danced. We were part of something great. I left thinking things had come to an end. Now I realize yesterday is a wonderful part of a continuing larger story.
