As I reviewed a contract, one section stood out; representations and warranties. In this contract I did not see anything of note, however a question lingered. What was I representing and warranting in this negotiation? Even as I asked the question within my mind, the larger question formed, unasked and without answer; what did I personally represent and warrant?
I know the answer if I use my highest aspirations and greatest dreams. In that nirvana, I bring a sense of community and possibilities, compassionate hope, inspiration for more, and a compelling need for unity in our diversity. I am authentic. I am committed. I am accountable. I am strong and stable.
In short, I would love to rep and warrant that I am an awesome guy without blemish! Reality bites, reminding me of my weaknesses and flaws. History has taken note of my failures and times where I have come up short. It is a truth that I have little wish to visit or deny.
As I reflect on one of my heroes from the past, I find that David brought an extraordinary level of candor and honesty to these questions. In his life, I see failures that would overwhelm the lives of normal men and women. Life whispers, reminding me that his model reveals lessons that still work today.
Candor and honesty are doorways to learning, help, and growth. Without both there is little opportunity for something better.
Embracing the help and backing of others strengthens both. We, at least I, have a natural instinct that starts with a desire to do it all on my own. David, from a young age, looked beyond himself. He could see and feel God blessing and reality of a Divine promise; “I’ll guarantee his family tree and underwrite his rule.” (Psalm 89.29)
Living big and bold creates opportunities for awesome outcomes! Yes, you and I will fail. The point of living is engaged action. Each outcome is an opportunity to learn, grow, and live.
I represent and warrant my desire to live big with Divine endorsement.
