I caught sight of the young mother and her child standing next to the buffet at breakfast. You could see the intensity in the child’s eyes and posture as his mother considered the choices. Fruit, tapas, and condiments were choices, along with breads, cereals, and sweats.
There was a fun dynamic on display. Mother and son, I am in charge and I want to be in charge, I know what is best competing with I know what I want. Back and forth, mother listening and acting, young son want to be dominate male chatting away without relief.
As the plate began to fill, a friend walks up and starts talking with the mother. In the perfect moment, the young boy reaches to the plate and takes charge, politely feeding the mother as he had been when he was much younger! Perfecting timing his movements, it was a master class demonstration in how one should feed another regardless of their age. Timing, food selection, technique all playing out in harmony. Mom continued to talk, smiling, and eating while the young boy took on the role of food giver and dominating character in the scene.
As I considered the role reversal, real, temporary, and perceived, I could see myself responding to Divine care. There are times where I confidently act as if I know what God needs. I am that young boy. I take charge. I offer to God what I confidently think s/he needs. I can see God’s gracious smile and acceptance of my gifts. The acceptance reinforces my confidence that I am in charge.
I consider the bigger story, a mother’s love for her son in good and bad, strength and weakness, I am reminded of Divinity’s love for you and me. Old words directed to David describe how Divinity looks towards us; “I’ll preserve him eternally in my love, I’ll faithfully do all I so solemnly promised.” (Psalm 89.28)
This morning the story continued. Plate full, mother and son returned to the table. Tradition roles resumed. Love, living, and growth on display. An awesome mom.
