I reflected on a day and time of remembrance and celebration. I find myself thankful for all the people who contributed to making the day and program what it was. While I was one of the larger visible faces, it was clear to me I was merely playing in the role that people saw. In thinking of the pieces that went into the larger story, there was the big yet not-so-visible role of my brother doing much of the heavy lifting in writing and editing the sketch I presented. There were significant contributions to meals, video presentations, and staff to bring it to life during the memorial service itself. Without any one piece, the day and service would not have been what it was.
As I start the day, Life is taking time to remind me of my role in an even larger story.
I, and we, have been chosen by Divinity to be carriers of love, kindness, and care. Without us, it doesn’t happen. “The same point was made when God said to Pharaoh, ‘I picked you as a bit player in this drama of my salvation power.’” (Romans 9.17) Individuals of all types are invited. While the invitation is there, in our freedom, we decide if we want to participate.
No one person does everything. Community, collaboration, and harmony are essential elements of Divinity’s manifestation. Egos need to be checked at the entrance to the day. Rank serves no purpose. It is all about sharing life’s most precious gifts with one another. No compensation is expected or accepted. In the process of giving away what one has been given, one discovers what it means to be divine.
Not all gifts are received. For a gift to be truly a gift, it must be given without any need for recompense. No obligations are passed with the gift to the receiver. What happens with the gift after it is received is another story.
Being a role player is rarely easy. Though it may feel as if one is at war, the results can be stunning.
