Sand dunes always speak to me of hard work. Walking is hard work, especially when one is trying to get to the top. If there is an easy way, it must be a closely guarded secret. Most individuals avoid the opportunity that always ends up becoming a challenge. From a young age, I have been encouraged to work hard and face challenges head-on. While this works with some things in life, experience reminds me that this approach is not the universal solution to everything.
Not every challenge is one that I must solve. In certain cases, my primary role is in support. In other cases, the first response is to see if the challenge is simply a reflection of looking at something from the wrong perspective. As an example, when I am not being heard, it is far too easy to think that the solution is to repeat myself slowly and loudly. If I take a deep breath, break the cycle, and remember my mission, everything changes. This takes me to an old reminder; “Moses wrote that anyone who insists on using the law code to live right before God soon discovers it’s not so easy – every detail of life regulated by fine print!” (Romans 10.5)
The first solution, doing it myself by walking now, is not always the best one. With sand, look for something that can be used as a ride. Camels, 4WD SUVs, and ATVs are all options, especially if you plan to cover any kind of distance. Think through the time of day, especially if water is limited. Thought and care are great friends when one is facing a problem.
Build on a foundation of hope. Discover the beauty and wonder that is within everything. Sometimes it is hidden deep within. The quest of discovering and embracing will lead to hope. As I turned into the wind, I could feel tiny grains of sand leaving their mark on me. Each is a reminder of a community. As small and insignificant as each grain is, in the big picture, sand is powerful.
