It’s easy to think New York is the center of the world. After all, everything that could possibly be is here, somewhere. Music, art, drama, business, and academics are thriving. It is an amazing pot of human diversity – cultures, ages, and experiences blending into a wonderful mosaic. Diversity isn’t something one spends much time talking about; it’s a norm not an exception. Sports, food, and medicine all take their spots on center stage.
Yet for all New York offers and is, it doesn’t have everything. I enjoy the community here yet I miss family. I look forward to the excitement and bustle, yet I long for peace and silence. I love the creativity and inspiration, yet there is something about being and doing that I often do not find in this metropolis.
Many think they have found their god. As I reflect on their behavior and my own, I see each holding onto the god/God of their hearts. Yet I wonder if we realize how much bigger, more different and amazing Divinity really is. Is my imagination open to the wonder of what is and could be in my life? Can I shed the shackles which limit my visions to the role Divinity is willing to play in my life? Could there be more to god than I thought possible? Is Divinity capable of more than my boundaries? Will I risk any or everything to be in relationship?
There are many who think they’ve arrived. They tell us that “this song will be sung in the country of Judah: We have a strong city, Salvation City, built and fortified with salvation.” (Isaiah 26.1) Yet I wonder if they have seen the God of possibilities and wonder, of unlimited compassion and acceptance. The God I know exceeds my ability to understand. The God I’ve seen goes way beyond my imagination. God is mysterious and wonderful, beautiful and awesomely frightful, and most of all capable of doing the impossible. This God loves everyone. Imagine a new world, created by God with everyone you know present. It begins today.
