In physical business interaction, someone is in control. Coerced, manipulated, or just incidental, someone has more control than the others. The underlying rationale for the analysis is rooted in old history, from the lessons of who one could trust in Roman times to, to Knights jousting, and other situations, the lessons still influence how we react and feel in certain situations.
When I was just getting started, a mentor recommended I read a book on the subject. He explained in advance that his recommendation was not an attempt to teach me the art of manipulation. His goals were awareness, understanding, and insight. Be aware of the actions of others and the impact actions have on relationships. Understand why one feels whatever emotion follows action. Draw on insights to make more informed decisions.
As I have shared the book with others, a natural competition always follows on who can control the other. Many lessons have emerged, but the first one relates to scripted responses versus natural. Natural ones always win (come first and take precedent) over scripts.
As I read an old psalm, the lessons replay themselves. “Teach me how to live to please you because you’re my God. Lead me by your blessed Spirit into cleared and level pastureland.” (Psalm 143.10)
I see the writer longing to have a natural relationship, not scripted. The role Divinity plays is so important that a script is not enough, the writer needs to learn and embrace things naturally.
The destination is understood to be a place where the relationship path will lead. Scripts are a means to an end. The structure of the request understands that this will never come together if it is a mechanical script. Heart, relationship, and work are essential elements.
Motivation and intent will be revealed through one’s choices and process. When one loves, all kinds of emotions come along in the process. When one commits to learning and growing, a journey will follow.
There is no doubt that scripts help one learn. Natural learning comes as one moves beyond scripts and into the heart.
