Freedom is a Divine gift that resides in you and me. I believe this gift resides in every human being. We share a unique ability to choose how we will respond, the way we will react, and the path we follow. Even if we give the choice away, we will still make the choice.
Our perspectives of freedom are not fixed. They change with experience and context. As I reflected on the paths forward with a friend, I realize that we were struggling with fear. Each wanted and needed to belong. We wanted to be sure. We knew we had others that were and are depending on us.
As I celebrated another’s departure and new fortunes, I was reminded of the simple axiom; “If you have a chance at freedom, go ahead and take it. I’m simply trying to point out that under your new Master you’re going to experience a marvelous freedom you would never have dreamed of.” (1 Corinthians 7.21)
I do not think the celebration last night was anticipated six months ago. As we talked about the motivation there was a sense of confusion and betrayal. Whatever the feeling about how he has come to this point, I could see he was filled with hope! He was ready for a new chapter. His confident from holding the hand of Hope was tangible. He eyes lit up when the subject turned to the future. He stood taller, with more confidence as we explored the potential. With happiness for him, I could see the window he was stepping into.
As a grey morning emerges, I wonder if I am looking for my opportunities. It is easy to retreat in fear of what might not occur. It takes courage to respond to what I do not know. I forget what God has done. As I look forward it is hard to anticipate what God will yet do. I know that God is here. God offers to walk with us, guiding as we listen. I hope we have the courage to seize the moment with hope.
