The lob ball throw usually occurs with a set-up question that seems innocent and natural. It can also occur with invitations to be a part of a seemingly random request to be at a future place and time that just happens to fit in a bigger scheme. In every situation there is a unique opportunity for something to happen. Cynics would like us to believe that these moments are points of artificial manipulation but I would like to suggest something otherwise. Opportunities to answer and act in truth are opportunities to be part of God’s ongoing creative process.
There are times, not always, where I know a lob is on the way. There is time to set myself up, anchoring my feet, adjusting my stance, preparing my hands while letting my eyes and senses fulfill their creative potential. I am in the game of life, at the plate, with an opportunity to make a difference!
John was in the middle of an incredible vision. He is convinced that he is in the presence of God. Everything is foreign yet somehow it is also familiar and natural. In the middle of a scene with animals, elders, and every creature of the universe a lob is thrown to John unexpectedly.
“Just then one of the Elders addressed me: “Who are these dressed in white robes, and where did they come from?” Taken aback, I said, ‘Oh, Sir, I have no idea—but you must know.’” (Revelation 7.13)
He returns the favor!
Today, yes this morning, during lunch, and in the afternoon, you and I will have life’s lobs laid out before us. Each is an opportunity to tell the truth and lay out grace, mercy, and love. Along life’s journey, in pain and beauty, in love and anger, and in destruction and confusion, each moment is an opportunity to be part of the solution. There is no question that life can be tough, difficult, and extremely painful. That is a given. The question is one of being in the game, deciding to participate, and on which side. Ready?
