I look towards the source of the wind. The horizon told the story. A storm was on the way. Staying in a place of safety is always a good idea, especially with a storm menacing and growling in front of you. In hindsight, the storm arrived more quickly than I anticipated. Even with the clear view, public alerts, and warnings, the winds and rain came in with a fury that I appreciated a lot more with hindsight. From a safe place, I watched the storm last out all around me. I reflected on those before me, thinking of places of safety and support.
Today begins with the lingering evidence of the storm’s damage. Reports suggest we received a year’s worth of rain in a day. I can see pools of water where it is normally sand in every direction. As I consider the possible storms ahead, I find myself carrying lesson reminders with me.
Going it alone is never the answer, especially in a storm. Strength is found in community and sharing our safe spaces. Seek help and safety knowing a storm is on the way. If by chance one is caught out, be on the alert for those who need help as well as those who can share. It is in community and walking together that we are strong and protected.
Sheltering is wisdom in action. Accepting one’s limitations opens the window to collaboration, friendship, and enduring relationships. I think of travelers across time. I can hear between the lines as they share messages between places of refuge; “Gaius, who is host here to both me and the whole church, wants to be remembered to you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our good friend Quartus send their greetings.” (Romans 16.23, 24). From late-night curries to grilled cheese sandwiches and beyond, life restoration occurs as we shelter together.
Storms blow against us physically as well as against our hearts and souls. Taking shelter is more than a physical house. It is finding the Divine place reserves for my heart and yours. With Her, we are safe.
