I looked across and realised I could only focus on one spot. I was confronted by the reality of knowing there was more while seemingly unable to look beyond the immediate. As I sat along, waiting, I reflected on the whispers within. I was taken to a moment when a trusted friend shared advice for my benefit that I did not understand. In the old moment, I was trapped in my awareness, unable to respond in words or actions. As I thought of moving beyond the spot I could see in the present, I felt darkness’ grip dominating my awareness. My sight lines filled with the battle between hope and despair.
Today begins with the lingering reminders of that moment dominating my thoughts. The darkness of my awareness gives me hope. I know it is an opportunity to see the guide-rails life offers me for the day ahead.
Looking into what we cannot see opens a door to more. Containers, dark spots, and blocked entry points can bring new insights and opportunities for growth. In an old story, there was a limited-access room filled with objects and symbols; “In it were placed the gold incense altar and the gold-covered ark of the covenant containing the gold urn of manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, the covenant tablets, and the angel-wing-shadowed mercy seat.” (Hebrews 9.4). Seeing with an open heart and mind opens a new door to more.
Facing and doing something with the unknown is the first step towards a better future. The alternatives are retreat or paralysis. Using the unknown as a foundation for one’s following action opens the door to new possibilities. Sight with positive actions is a form of realising the value of what life gives us.
Seeing and understanding is not always associated with joy and celebration. The mirror may be truthful even if it creates a feeling of being unkind. As I wrestle with darkness, I know I am holding an opportunity pearl. Today, I can use my life’s pearls for good as I step from a dark place into the light.
