DIFC’s skyline signals commitment, aggressiveness, and deal-making. There is a buzz delivered by an amazing mix of cultures, dress, generations, and behaviours. It is easy to see that just below the surface are warriors sharing a commitment to win at all costs. I admit that I may be seeing more than there is. My conversations with many who call this their work home leads me to conclude that my analysis is relatively bias-free. My experience with companies in this zone reinforces a view that mercenary principles are at the heart of many company cultures.
As a new chapter begins, I find myself considering my values and priorities. I know my actions will tell a story of how much I reflect the norm. If I am willing to look within myself, I will see how hard I am fighting to progress my vision and aspirations for a better future. As I consider this, I find myself holding life’s reminders for the day ahead.
Remember my calling. It can be challenging to stay within the lines. There is a natural tendency to worry about what others are doing. The desire for results can be overwhelming. The guidance offered generations earlier is a guide; “If you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don’t get bossy; if you’re put in charge, don’t manipulate; if you’re called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don’t let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face.” (Romans 12.8)
Remember others are with me. In the heat of the battle, feeling alone and abandoned is natural. Staying connected helps. In my day, it is key to create spaces where I let the voices of those close to my heart speak. At the same time, I prioritise listening to life, trusted voices, and my heart. When the two actions come together, I create a place where they can walk with me. I know each step comes with gifts of hope and courage.
