The traffic signals in the central city of Fujairah are bold, simple, and direct. It is hard to miss them. With the signal light starting on the pole, extending to the arm holding the light, and then onto the signal, one is likely to see the communication. If this were not enough, there is a timing light, again matching the signal, directly communicating how much time is left in this period. For a town of sixty thousand, while historical statistics were comparable to those of other emirates, local authorities decided to take things to a better place. The consequences are visible, foretelling the story of reduced deaths and serious accidents. Their action sets them apart.
As today dawns, I consider the parts of my life that set me apart from those before me.
I am part of my community, for good and in the bad. Regardless of my beliefs, actions, and priorities, life is found in the communities of my life. I am not alone. Living, walking, and growing come from my interactions and relationships. When I started here, my view changed from looking inward at myself to something bigger, more compelling, and potentially more inclusive. In unconditionally embracing others, I discovered and experienced the unconditional embrace of Divinity and her children.
Living for and with others is a decision to experience being part of a spiritual community. This community’s characteristics are care, kindness, and love. It is a view that begins externally, knowing that in looking outwards, I am acting with trust that others are doing the same. This “act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd.” (Hebrews 11.2). It is also an intentional affirmation of the Divine statement that we are her children, seeds that have the potential to be Divine voices, listening with compassion and acting with kindness and care as examples of Divine justice.
There is a measure to the seasons of our lives. I can make a difference. It begins with care and ends in engaged action. Each moment is an opportunity to express Divinity’s heart.
