I woke craving an old-school South Indian breakfast of dosas, vadas, and filtered coffee. In my quest, I found a small café in an alleyway with fourteen seats that many recommended. In addition to great food, the café provided the perfect blend of attention and space to enjoy the meal. The unexpected signal with my second coffee reminded me of what community is all about.
There is a thirst within each soul for community. Experience satisfies this thirst as I hang out with friends, sharing stories of our lives. Mobile calls and virtual meetings point me to what I am missing. As much as I need my time of meditation and reflection, I have come to appreciate how community feeds my heart and soul. When I am running low, I hear my heart repeating the old prayer; “Pray that we may be together soon.” (Hebrews 13.19)
Our community needs our contributions. When I start from the inside out, I see all the advantages community brings to my life. On the best occasions, I am uplifted. I am also supported and guided. As I step beyond myself and look around me, I see and hear those with needs crying out to be heard. By its definition and purpose, community is about the family and the support we can give each other. The unconditional embrace, the empathy to sit and be present in the dark times, and the compassion to support as the individual seeks to be supported.
Words and actions tell a story. The signal in the coffee was welcomed and treasured. It reminded me that we are a family, even if we do not initially recognise each other. With each expression of trust, respect, and care, eyes begin to see more, and hearts are touched. My breakfast was more than a masala dosa, vada, and filter coffee. These fed my physical being. The conversations, coffee art, and smiles lifted me and kicked started my day.
I will have opportunities today to be part of a community. I see art, laughter, and engagement—exciting times are ahead!
