Intuitively, anything with a “1” is first. While technically correct, as I walked into the metro station, I knew I was not where I needed to be. In this case, “1” was not the most important; it simply represented a step along the way. I would go through many numbers to finally arrive where I hoped to be, in line to board the train.
The lingering puzzle of first, last, important, helpful, giver, and receiver continues to linger in my mind. It is as if I am being asked to solve a puzzle with a meaning that is beyond the obvious.
As today begins, I realise the question is a gift that will guide me through the day ahead. My puzzle had little to do with rank. My gift is in recognising what happens when one gives to another. I am blessed when I am accepted. I am blessed when I am forgiven. I am blessed when I am embraced and called to action. With each, “In acts of blessing, the lesser is blessed by the greater.” (Hebrews 7.7).
Those who bless me have also been blessed. It takes the experience of being blessed, of knowing what it was like to be without and then receive, to understand the meaning of a blessing and the responsibility that comes with it.
Greater is a way of describing depth, experience, and much more. Life reminds me of the accountability that comes with greatness. Greatness is not to be confused with superiority, standing, or value. One hears about great food and concludes that it only comes from the hand of a recognised chef. It all changes when one tastes a dish cooked with love, passion, and care. Humility, heart-shaped kindness, and compassion are signs of greatness.
Being blessed is a call to action. As easy as it is to imagine a blessing as a crown, I have come to see it as something very different. A blessing is a call to embrace those who are hurting, lift up those who are struggling, and support all on our shared journey.
