I often think the premise is impossible but in my heart I know the truest truths in life are always simple. Knowing how to say them is rarely easy. Understanding how to convey complex processes and framework requires serious amounts of reflection and sweat. Pursuing the simple cache phrase often seems a waste of time. Yet nothing could be more important. As much as we try to make things complex, at the heart of it all it just is not that way.
It’s as if the more words we put to the issue the less we are really saying about it. Politicians snow us with rhetoric, bills, and laws. More and more words saying less and less. Yet great communicators always keep it simple. Leaders distill their messages into understandable sound bytes. Even those working on future plans know how to engage people from a wide range of educational and cultural backgrounds.
In contrast those who are opposed to change often masked it in complex questions. Present a new idea and the simple response is “I don’t understand what you mean”. Clarify the point, use an illustration or two, and they simple fall back onto the “I don’t understand” or “the illustration doesn’t make sense to me”. The burden or proof seems to remain on the new idea, no matter how bad the present might be.
Resistance has its own logic. Use every illustration and metaphor literally. Confuse those who understood. Bend ideas in small, seemingly inconsequential ways, to alter the outcome. It worked in Jesus day and now. Then “voices from the crowd answered, ‘We heard from God's Law that the Messiah lasts forever. How can it be necessary, as you put it, that the Son of Man ‘be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?’” (John 12.34) Today you hear a variation. “How can you say love is more important than law? What would society be without law and order?”
The simple answer is to love intensely and fully in everything and you don’t need laws. Until then keep it simple.
