Within the midst of laughter, music, and fun chaos, the dried white flowers lay still. As I looked at them, it was as if everything around me slowed down to a point of silent reflection. The clarity I found in the gentleness of the white, the softness of the shadows, and the hard stem threads holding everything together, was a whispering lesson within a moment.
Life is simple, even as we make it anything but. Bursts of colours, upbeat, engaging, and participation calling music, and lively conversation between friends who just happened to be at the same brunch were just beyond this flower picture etching itself on my mind. With all the texture, tones, and features to give clarity, at the heart, there is a black-and-white simplicity to life.
Life and trust are intertwined with each other, fragile elements held together in your heart and my own. As delicate as life and trust are, when they exist together, the impossible becomes tangibly real. “That’s why it is said, ‘Abraham was declared fit before God by trusting God to set him right.’” (Romans 4.22). In our willingness to trust Divinity and the way Divinity works in and through others, we discover the Divine that is always resident within us. We are God’s children. Divinity lives within us, becoming real through our decisions and choices for compassion, care, and community. When we act in love, we build on the trust which connects us to Divinity.
Beauty and wonder grow when used. In slowing down to see and experience the flowers and the way they played with light, I rediscovered my opportunity to make a difference in today’s moments. The challenges, turmoil, and drama are here. I will need to respond, and yet there is a simple choice in each moment. I can choose to express compassion. I can decide to demonstrate how to care. I can embrace those around me.
It is in each moment that I will write my story. It is my unique opportunity to exercise freedom of choice and action. Each moment reveals my art.
