I enjoy the storyline and visuals of the toy soldiers coming to life to aid the Nutcracker in his battle with the King of Mice. To be clear, I hate battles, I love harmony. Within these two statements, in the concept of good versus evil, it is inspiring to see the willingness to stand for what is right no matter what. In a Thanksgiving dinner with friends, I found myself sitting next to one such soldier. In the reflection, I was thankful, challenged, and filled with hope.
I am thankful for the individuals in my life who have stood for others. When someone is oppressed, accused, or dominated by others, there is a cry for help. Life is already difficult. When others make it more difficult for one or many, the call goes out. I am thankful to everyone who responded. I carry a debt for those who have stood with me, which I can only repay by standing with and for others.
I am challenged by the willingness of the few to do something that does not directly benefit themselves. In the past, it has been easy to think that these individuals do not exist. “It’s the same today. There’s a fiercely loyal minority still – not many, perhaps, but probably more than you think.” (Romans 11.5) I see the fingerprints and footsteps all around me. I have even benefited from their actions. The challenge increases when I know I am a stranger. If they are willing to do it for me, I must find it within myself to do it for others.
I am hopeful for many reasons. First, there are more people trying to make this world a better place than at any time in my life. In big ways and small, with lots of visibility as well as hidden, people are acting. They are working to address the needs of the excluded. They are fighting to make this inclusive and accessible. They are working to create the opportunity to participate and enjoy for all.
Today I am thankful, engaged, and hope filled.
