Solo to Group

The formal dinner was spread throughout the restaurant.  Although the walls opened up between the rooms, the natural acoustics hindered the ability of everyone to hear.  From the expressions, it was obvious that several tables were disadvantaged.

In this setting, a guest had been invited to lead the men in singing a song.  As he stood, he confidently suggested that he did not need a microphone.  Several more boisterous members of the audience reminded him that this was not the case.  Reluctantly he accepted the microphone and shared a few observations about the recent past and the story of recovery for one in the audience that had a near fatal electric scooter accident.

Seeing how much progress he had made, from a struggle to live, move, and talk, to the laughter, speech, and smile today, created an emotionally charged setting for everyone.  As the tear well in my eyes, I realized I was laughing with and for him.  The guest let his words drift into silence and in an effortlessly way set the microphone aside and started to sing.

As the men join in the chorus, I realized everyone could hear and feel the song.  While the words were simple, the caring among the singers and with the audience was tangibly real.  It was an amazing gift from one taking a solo lead to a group responding and in turn sharing the collective gift with everyone around him.

As the morning after breaks, I realized I finally understand the psalmist words; “Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence.”  (Psalm 100.2)

The recipe last night was simple.  Celebration and laughter, heart wrapped gifts of emotion, and a setting of trust.  Receiver and giver both came away changed.  What we knew with our minds we understand with our hearts.  The connection between head and heart gives life to that otherwise cannot be expressed.

I want to repeat the recipe today.  I believe it is possible.  It will feel different however the foundation is constant; hope, compassion, and the willingness to share with others.
