I sat on the bench in the shade, enjoying the quietness, gentle breeze, and harmony. It felt as though I was in the prime spot, privileged. As the sun moved, my shade diminished. What was favoured gave way to being hot and uncomfortable. It was a thought-provoking change. I thought I was sitting in the best location. It was, for a time. As I moved, I could hear Life’s whispers taking the situation into a learning moment and framing the day ahead of me.
Life offers everyone a seat. At times, it may seem perfect! On other occasions, it can be dark, uncomfortable, and even painful. It does not matter how wealthy or poor you are. Status, ego, and power will not guarantee a first-class seat. Everyone has a shared view of the other. It echoes one writer’s words across generations and cultures; “God may give wisdom and knowledge and joy to his favorites, but sinners are assigned a life of hard labor, and end up turning their wages over to God’s favorites. Nothing but smoke – and spitting into the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 2:26) From my life, all that is certain is that you and I will have a seat, at least for a time.
Life’s seat is an opportunity that rests within each heart. The opportunity is not about where we sit. It is always about what we do with where we are. With this moment, I have an opportunity in Abu Dhabi. What follows will be part of my story of what unfolded with possibilities on my left, right, and ahead of me with everything at my disposal. Yesterday, I was in the shade, enjoying the harmony one finds in quietness. Today, I am out in the world, free and challenged to do something with what I have.
Life is more than just me. On life’s bench, there are others. I want to introduce myself. It would be fantastic if they trusted me with their stories and dreams. I hope we will connect in ways that bring joy and hope to the steps ahead.
