The doorway to the restaurant was an introduction to all that followed. Minimalist, monotoned, and unassuming – it reflected contemporary Japanese quietness. The warm smiles of those inside welcomed our group in understated voices with a hint of warm emotions. The menu’s heart was a series of ramen dishes that reflected the setting and attention to detail. As good as everything was, I wondered if my longing for a soothing bowl of ramen would be satisfied.
With a fun conversation as a complementary side dish, the warmth and comfort of the vegan ramen dish was a self-contained experience. From the anticipation created as cloth bibs being tied around my neck without the need for my consent to the emotional reaction as I enjoyed the dark broth and soba noodles, I could sense the lessons quietly landing on my plate for consideration.
Introductions are complete when one meets another’s heart. The setting and anticipation pointed me to a story only written when I experienced the broth and noodles. As I considered my emotions and the sense of kindled hope, I was reminded of a writer’s observation about the old Biblical system of worship; “Under this system, the gifts and sacrifices can’t really get to the heart of the matter, can’t assuage the conscience of the people,” (Hebrews 9.9). The hints, indications, and outlines one can find in the beginning will fade without experiencing the wonder of compassion, the beauty of kindness, and the awe of care.
Experiences are emotional and personal. One may share what has occurred within; as I listened to my words, I realised I was only touching the edge of my emotions and their impact on my heart. Knowing that whatever I might say would be incomplete, the best I could offer was a recommendation and invitation. Creating awareness in a trusted relationship can create an opportunity for others.
Today is a stage and opportunity. I can lead the introductions to those I meet, offer kindness and care as a setting for what follows, let go and gift others with the opportunity I was given.
