The hotel signage was bright, colourful, and distinctive. In the middle of not much, it stood out clear and tall. Even the sign’s edge was visible from a long way away. As I looked at it in the darkness, it was as if the sign was offering refuge and safety to those most vulnerable. Everyone would be grateful for the room and protection. Within its walls, no harm could follow.
As the sun rises to a new day, I am struck by the way others have taken their stance over the years and wrapped me in their arms of protection. Looking back, I can see the signs that drew me into their circle. I knew I was in a place of trust. I understood the walls that marked the boundaries of safety. I celebrated the freedom that followed.
With the gifts still residing in my heart and mind, there is a smile emerging as Life’s whispers point to the opportunities ahead of me.
One person can take a stand to potentially change everything that follows. The difference comes when one or more care to make a difference. A writer’s testimony could be repeated today; “They once put their lives on the line for me. And I’m not the only one grateful to them. All the non-Jewish gatherings of believers also owe them plenty,” (Romans 16.4). When I think of hope, it begins with one individual’s stand against evil and the sacrifice that follows.
One is never alone, look for the signs that point to the others rising to the cause of kindness and care. In my darkness, the natural action is to focus within. When I look beyond the darkness, I find individuals offering a listening ear, tangible support, and experienced-based guidance. Individuals of all shapes, sizes, colours, and beliefs, reaching out, standing ready, and willing to walk with me.
In the morning light, knowing I am embraced and accepted, I hear the call to stand ready. Today’s story comes through my words, deeds, and presence. Each step will reveal how good the day can be.
