The morning air was sandy, damp, and cold, at least for Abu Dhabi. As the dawn emerged, in every direction, the views were misty and dusty. The Burj Mohammed Bin Rashid building, otherwise known as Abu Dhabi’s World Trade Centre, was visibly blurred by the elements. As I reflected, the metaphors of standing tall with Divinity while dealing with life’s forces emerged, lingering to shape the way I see the day ahead.
Living and the elements come with each other. Even as I could see the tower rising through the elements, I knew there was so much more buried below. It was easy to notice and consider the obvious. Just beyond my vision was the centre of Abu Dhabi. Buildings, businesses, and people were dealing with the same elements as the tower only they were buried in them. Engaging means that I will face forces that will blur and confuse. I may be the exception, able to stand tall through all that comes. It is more likely that I will be buried and overwhelmed, seemingly invisible to others.
For every building, there are designers, construction workers, maintenance personnel, and so many more. Each plays a role in helping one stand and stay standing. One must never forget their role. When I consider whatever good is within, I am reminded of the role Divinity played in helping me embrace compassion and act with kindness. I hear the old reminder; “If he could graft you – branches cut from a tree out in the wild – into an orchard tree, he certainly isn’t going to have any trouble grafting branches back into the tree they grew from in the first place. Just be glad you’re in the tree, and hope for the best for the others.” (Romans 11.24)
Being raised is not defined by just standing. Success comes in standing in the arena, facing the elements, and realising our calling and purpose. It may be hazy and dusty, that comes with engagement. Success is revealed through the ways we face the battles and how we choose to live.
