As I look at history, I find individuals standing tall for their beliefs. Often their stories are lost to history. Yet, the fact that we do not recall their stories today does not diminish their contribution on the day. Known people, and less so, contribute in ways that touch the lives of those around them in ways that transcends the moment. The choices made on that day, in that particular moment live on in your life and mine. It is a thought that forces me to pause and reflect on the potential in the moment at hand.
In a state of reflection, I find myself asking a series of questions. Am I willing to see this moment for all that it can be? Am I willing to let this moment unfold, responding with intent? Am I willing to exercise my freedom in a way that reflects the values and priorities that I hold to be truth?
I think of those that have touched my life and I find myself looking to those willing to stand for truth when it was not convenient. I am in awe, admiring those willing to risk their pride and future because of what they believed. I see heroes walking with God and others, relying on the strength found in the many. I find common denominators of humility, accountability, and sacrifice in these men and women. With each life, Hope is reborn.
It is important to remember. When everyone fled, “all, that is, but the apostles. Good and brave men buried Stephen, giving him a solemn funeral-not many dry eyes that day!” (Acts 8.2) Everything changed with their actions. Then and now, we reap the benefits. Even today, while some abandoned the truth for safety and protection, there are those that stand for truth and others. As a result, communities and countries change for the benefit of those that call them home.
The moment that is now is waiting for our script. What we do now will paint our story, touch those around us, and live in the lives that follow.
