Rebuilding, improving and building on what already exist, is not always an option. It’s natural to respond in a way which affirms the positive things which currently exist. Experience tells me this is not always right. Even with positive elements in the foundation, the base may not be enough to build a future consistent with the values and principles close to one’s heart. The dance and challenge is to know the difference.
The uncertainty has existed across centuries of human endeavors. God made the call for one generation which could seem harsh to those believing every situation and person will succeed on the path they are on. Yet the statement was and is here; “make these people blockheads, with fingers in their ears and blindfolds on their eyes, so they won't see a thing, won't hear a word, so they won't have a clue about what's going on and, yes, so they won't turn around and be made whole.” (Isaiah 6.10)
As harsh as this is, the story remains unfinished. Our paths, the future which will emerge from our steps, are as open, wide, and possible as you and I decide it to be. As I observe people in New York, London, and even the smaller town of Redlands, there is an unnerving consistency. The hope people carry with them is self determined. The sense of family is determined by their vision (or lack of). The understanding of mission and purpose is directly linked to a willingness to see beyond one’s self.
We carry the ability to turn, change, on a dime. We control our future. We can, in each moment, move towards our values and priorities or away. We can start over at anytime. Yet we live in our life’s momentum. We carry our history which at times seems to be extraordinarily heavy. We are bound by everything and everyone around us. God knows this. The Spirit is empowered to give each absolute and total freedom. With the Spirit, we can release our past, live fully and completely in the present, and step unbound.
