I am going to meet with a young company today. It is a simple request; tell us a few stories. Over the course of an hour or so, I will have the opportunity to remember and share. The broader subject is about transformational leadership, yet for me it is about the truths that make a difference in life. As I scribble a few notes, I realize my heart is taking a brief excursion with good friends that will always be close to my heart.
Life is never about the facts and figures. It is always about the hearts. In my stories, I am reminded that leadership is about linking hearts with minds. If it doubt, give me the heart. The decision to embrace more is at the heart of change.
Life is complex, chaotic, and confusing. When we look to the future, it is easy to let life overwhelm us. John Lennon noted that the more he saw the less that he knew for sure. Reaching for less will often get us more.
Communities never start with the many. They are born with the few. To get to a destination, it is important to be in sync with two others. Only with that connection can you reach a small group. It takes a community to reach the world.
In racing for a goal, I often find myself with eyes firmly fixed on the horizon. While important, one must never lose sight of the step ahead. Everything pivots in the moment at hand.
Life gives us the stories of others. While they can be amusing, they are primarily for our education. Life wants to help us live to the maximum. The stories of those that went before us are aides for our journey.
An old writer left the following note; “It pleases me that you continue to remember and honor me by keeping up the traditions of the faith I taught you.” (1 Corinthians 11.1) To everyone I have worked with or shared the journey, thank-you. You are the heart of the stories that make a difference.
