The premise leaders use is a simple one; follow and you will win. One action, one outcome. The premise is clear. It is easy to understand. Promised history to follow paraphrases the psalmist’s words; “He led Israel out, their arms filled with loot, and not one among his tribes even stumbled.” (Psalm 105.37) It seems so simple.
Three questions before buying-in.
I am passionate about winning. I hate losing! Winning defines the answer to the “why” question that I always end up starting with. Winning can be truth, principles, and values prevailing over the alternatives. Winning can be getting to a destination. Winning is also doing what is right, best, or needed.
Winning looks like… I suggest filling in the answer before saying yes to your heart.
I like understanding the path between here and there. When I believe, I believe! Understanding is the answer to the “how” question. It also opens a door to my engagement. Winning takes more than one. If I buy in, then being a part of it all comes with my yes. There are different roles, finding the right fit creates a potential win/win within the winning effort.
How includes… Answers will likely include pieces of a plan with milestones, people, resources, and actions.
I need honesty in the outcomes and results. Knowing what we aspire to achieve, the results and outcome, is integral to my passion and commitment. At times, I am not sure that I can describe a “good” or “great” outcome. I have lived through disappointments and leaders with selfish agendas. Asking, clarifying, and confirming aspirational outcomes associated with the why and how opens an opportunity to be give one’s self fully to the cause.
What will happen can be described by… Sharing your answer with others involved so that a shared view is confirmed across the community, including the leaders, is the first step in an all for one, one for all journey.
Life comes with opportunities and challenges. Knowing why, understanding how, and believing in what can be achieved is the beginning of something great.
