Every individual has a story. Within each story are highs and lows, the longing for love and belonging, as well as painful tragedies. It is in listening and embracing each other’s stories that we reveal how Divinity lives within us. In the manifestations of what follows, I find myself rediscovering the presence of hope. With each moment, it is as if I am being embraced by love. The experience leaves me with the knowledge that I am part of a community and a greater story.
Our stories are told in two ways. The obvious way is in the retelling of details, sometimes as an event and other occasions as a chapter. A friend once shared his joy in releasing himself into the stories shared with him. He spoke of curiosity and wonder, of questions and simply letting the story unravel as it would. I keep coming back to his model with joy. I love the way life is revealed through the peaks and especially the valleys.
The less obvious way is through one’s choices and actions. Each echoes our hearts and the experiences which have shaped what is known as our soul. In the echo of my actions, I see a tail I often find confusing. I know it is not my best. I see lost opportunities as well as those embraced. Every manifestation of our story is an opportunity to learn and grow if we are willing to use them. Life reminds me of the opportunity to see, understand, and learn.
Stories are often best understood with distance. In the immediate, it is hard to see the context. Nuances are often missed. Interplays can be misunderstood. Gifting oneself with quietness, space, and time creates the potential for restoration and learning.
Powerful stories impact the lives of everyone involved. The words of yesterday ring true in life; “Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.” (James 1.27).
Storytellers are manifestations of Divinity’s voice.
