The battle between ends and means is never over. Even when one believes that one view is superior to the other, new situations arise that cause one to pause. Simple economics may demand that one act in ways that can be confused with discrimination (higher prices in stores that are more frequently robbed, often in a minority neighborhood). Legitimate reviews and questions may push one towards taking pragmatic shortcuts that hide the truth. Drowning in any form ultimately drives everyone to consider selfish acts. It often seems that if one wants to be certain in life, as one must stop thinking and considering what options are available for success.
As the battles continue to play out in my life, I find there is a distinct change in my perspective when I adjust my horizon. If I am only focused on the immediate, the ends win every time! I simply cannot afford to be patient. Honesty appears to have a price tag that exceeds it worth. Integrity comes across as a luxury. Even transparency looks subservient to control and manipulation.
If I take my eyes off myself and look out and upwards, everything changes. The end is already determined. It is described, documented, and guaranteed by God. Truth wins! Children of God are restored. Pain, anguish, and sorrow are replaced with peace, community, and an opportunity to live without boundaries. What matters now is the means. How we go about living is critically important.
When we are attacked, we can respond knowing the real ending. Others have done it before, when Evil found out that it was “no match for his [a man of truth and integrity] wisdom and spirit when he spoke.” (Acts 6.10)
When we are challenged, we can look to answer factually, reducing the intensity of battle, and push forward towards a holistic community that works with loving acceptance.
When we are uncertain, we can listen with the intent of learning.
God is here, engaged, and willing to be part of the process of living. Walking with God is the ultimate core of success.
