It was a casual meeting over coffees where we shared ideas and business possibilities. As we gave our perspectives and listened to stories and insights, I recognized I was speaking with a regional leader. His expertise and experience came through the discussion of industry trends, stories of new entrepreneurs, and his company’s response. Stories were laced with humor and sadness, often driven by the innocent naiveties of individuals in leadership roles without the requisite experience and knowledge.
As I reflect on our conversation as a new day begins, I realize I had been speaking to someone in his sweet spot. In addition to the peace in his demeanor, there are several specifics which stood out.
His voice was heard and valued by those above him. The specific comments were supplemental to the conversation, casually added and heard as nuances and detail. In the soft and calm description, one could feel the mutual respect between this individual and those around him. Ideas were shared and valued. Insights came from all directions. He knew he belonged in the circle.
In the shadow of a chaotic year, he knew things were changing. Often change frightens. In this case, you could see him leaning into the currents, looking for ways to leverage the organisation as well as his personal strengths. In the willingness to adapt, he revealed an inner confidence in today as well as tomorrow.
The response to the offer of new opportunities went untouched. The deftness of being willing to listen while not indicating any interest in a potential opportunity was a clear indication that he knows where he is and the commitment which he has been made to the present. There was no rejection or loss of face by anyone at the table. Equally, there was nothing to indicate anything more than an openness to hear more in the future.
The psalmist noted the words of someone in their sweet spot; “This will always be my home; this is what I want, and I’m here for good.” (Psalm 132.14)
May we all know our sweet spots.
